Should the house be disinfected if someone has head lice?

Because head lice don’t live long off the scalp, there is no need for extra cleaning.
To get rid of lice or nits from items like hats or pillowcases:

Wash the items in hot water and dry in a hot dryer for 15 min; or
Store the items in an airtight plastic bag for 2 weeks.

What you will need:

Comb / brush
Old towel and clothes
Conditioner
Lice Meister Comb ( must be the long one )
Tweezers
Hair Pins ( for short or long hair )

Follow these simple instructions:

1 - Confirm the person has head lice
2 - Wet the hair and towel dry the hair.
3 - Get any wash out conditioner in the palm of your hand and
thoroughly apply and lather it into the hair.
4 - Make sure you have a Lice Meister Comb ** Those small
hard metal ones just do NOT work ** Google ** Lice
Meister comb to get an idea. **
5 - Start to go throw sections of the hari with the lice comb
piece by piece and comb the hair 6 to 10 times in that spot.
Then move on the the next spot. ** No need to clean the
lice comb every time you comb a single piece of hair, once
the nits have come off the hair they will not re-attach to
the hair. ** (This makes your time pass by faster.)
6 - After you have done the whole head, wash the conditioner
out of the head.
7 - Blow dry the head. All bugs should be gone at this point.
And 95 % - 99.9 % of the nits should be off the hair/head.
8 - What I like to do (as I own a flat straightener ) is go
through every piece of hair again and burn the little suckers
off the hair itself. Then when you shower they fall right off.
9 - Do this process every couple days for aprox 2 weeks. You
will be clear in no time.
10- When you are done, you need to go through the head one
more time with your fingers and tweezers and pick out
any nits that were missed. Use the hair pins to pin the
hair you have finished. For medium to long thin hair this
should not take more then 2 hours. For thicker hair it will
take 3-5 hours and should be checked more frequently
in the 2 weeks after to make sure all nits and lice are gone.

Signs and Tests

Head lice can be hard to see. You need to look closely. Use disposable gloves and look at the person's head under a bright
light. Full sunlight or the brightest lights in your home during daylight hours work best. A magnifying glass can help.

Part the hair all the way down to the sculp in very small sections, look both for moving lice and eggs (nits). Look at the entire head this way. Look closely around the top of the neck and behind the ears and at the crown of the head, these are the most common locations for eggs.

Treatment is recommended if even only one egg is found.

PREVENTION

Never share hair brushes, combs, hair pieces, hats, bedding, towels or clothing with someone who has head lice.

If your child has lice, be sure to check policies at schools, day-care centers, preschools and nurseries. Many do not allow infected children to be at school until the lice have been completely treated.

Some schools may have policies to make sure the invironment is clear of lice. Sometimes, the insects or their eggs get into areas such as carpets. Frequent cleaning of carpets and all other surfaces in child-care centers prevents spread of all types of infections including head lice.
